ADRIANA ANDALUZ, Make Up Artist, IATSE Local 798

Based in New York City, NY

Where did you grow up?

I’m proud to say I’m a born and bred NYer, raised in the Bronx. My mother is from Puerto Rico and my father is from El Salvador.

What are your responsibilities or roles in your department? I’m a makeup artist and have worked as a department head, key artist, day player etc. Responsibilities include maintaining continuity, covering talent on set and working within a team to make things flow smoothly. It’s never “just makeup.”

Are there any films that inspired you to start

working in television and film?

I love the character design and look of Guillermo Del Toro’s work, especially in Pan’s Labyrinth. You can tell there is a focus on practical effects and such a sharp eye for detail.

I also love period pieces like Mad Men,

The Get Down, and Penny Dreadful:

City of Angels that are so nuanced and specific.

How did you begin working in the industry? So I actually started out at makeup counter, originally I wanted to work in fashion. Working in film never crossed my mind and I had no knowledge as to how long film days can be (such an innocent!). I was asked to work as an assistant makeup artist on an independent film and something told me “Don’t ask when you’ll wrap”. From that one job,I kept working on indies and commercials and I made the decision to focus on joining Local 798.

What has been your favorite project to work on?

That is such a tough question! I’ve been really fortunate to work on amazing productions alongside some wonderful people. That being said, I was really glad to work on the final season of Pose, and both Seasons 2 of Run The World and Harlem, to be a small part of telling POC stories. I would love to see more representation on-screen and behind the scenes.

What advice would you give someone starting out in this industry? I would advise to show up and observe quietly, set etiquette is key. It sounds so after school special but BE NICE to everyone, you never know who is having a bad day. At the end of the day, we all want our departments to be respected.
