DANIEL MARTINEZ, Utility Sound Technician, IATSE 695

Where did you grow up? Both of my parents immigrated from the state of Michoacán in Mexico. I was born and raised in Orange County. What are your responsibilities or roles in your department? As a Utility Sound Technician I’m in charge of placing and hiding wireless transmitters on talent, second booming scenes, coordinating expendables and rentals among many other responsibilities. It is truly a jack of all trades position.

Are there any films that inspired you to start working in television and film?

The main film that inspired me to get involved in the industry is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

What has been your favorite project to work on?

My favorite project to work on has been Star Trek: Picard. It’s one of those re-affirming shows that feels like I’m headed down the right path.

How did you begin working in the industry? During my time at UC Riverside I had begun working on projects while getting my degree. I believe my first paid gig was doing sound for Geek And Sundry, followed by Disneyland Broadcast after networking while working at the park. What advice would you give someone starting out in this industry? This is an industry of relationships, often measured in decades. If someone is referring you out it is because they see something in you as a person worth investing in.
